🔌 USB-C and Micro USB port replacement: how it works
  1. Confirm the problemI check whether the port is loose, bent, or no longer charging, and rule out the cable.
  2. Open the controllerThe shell and battery are removed and the board is exposed.

🔘 Bumper actuation switch replacement: how it works

A bumper that feels mushy, sticks, or stops clicking usually has a worn switch under it.

  1. Test the bumpersI check which bumper is weak or not registering.

🕹️ Stick replacement: how it works
  1. Diagnose the driftI check the stick with a test tool to confirm it is drifting and rule out software or a dirty stick.
  2. Open the controllerThe shell is opened carefully, avoiding ribbon cables and the battery.
  3. Remove the old stick moduleThe worn stick module is desoldered or unclipped from the board.
  4. Install the new stickA new OEM stick goes in for a straight replacement. For Hall Effect or TMR, a magnetic-sensor stick replaces the old one, which removes the wear point that causes drift.
  5. Calibrate and testI test the full range of motion, deadzones and centering, then reassemble.

Hall Effect sticks use magnets and sensors instead of a worn contact, so they do not develop drift. TMR is a newer magnetic sensor with even more precise, smoother response. Both are upgrades on compatible controllers only.

Hall Effect and TMR are available for PS4 controllers, DualSense, DualSense Edge, and Xbox Series X and S controllers. Xbox One controllers get the OEM replacement.

🔧 Xbox Series X HDMI repair: how it works

The HDMI port on the Series X can loosen, crack, or lift from the board, which shows up as no signal, flickering, or a cable that wiggles.

  1. Check it outI confirm the symptoms, test different cables and a different TV, and inspect the port for damage.
  2. Open the consoleThe outer shell and internal shielding are removed to reach the motherboard.
  3. Remove the old portThe board is heated and the old HDMI port is lifted off without damaging the pads.
  4. Repair the padsPads and traces are cleaned up and repaired if needed.
  5. Solder in the new portA new HDMI port is fitted and soldered, with each joint inspected.
  6. Test and reassembleI test picture and sound, wiggle-test the connection, then close it back up.

Signs your HDMI port is the problem

No picture or a black screen, flickering or cutting out, a cable that feels loose or has to be held at an angle, or a port that looks bent or cracked. Different cable and TV combinations behaving the same way point to the port rather than the cable.

How the repair works

  1. Check it outI confirm the symptoms, try known-good cables and a second TV, and inspect the port under magnification for bent pins, a cracked shell, or lifted pads.
  2. Open the consoleThe shell panels come off, then the screws and shielding over the motherboard, keeping every screw sorted so it goes back in the right place.
  3. Remove the old portThe board is preheated and the old HDMI port is heated and lifted off carefully so the pads and traces under it are not torn up.
  4. Clean and repair the padsOld solder is cleaned off and the pads are inspected. Any lifted pad or damaged trace is repaired before the new port goes on.
  5. Solder in the new portA new HDMI port is aligned to the board and soldered in place, and every joint is checked for solid connections with no bridges between pins.
  6. Test and reassembleWith the console back together I test picture and sound with a cable in the port, wiggle-test the connection, and run it for a while before it goes back to you.

About this repair

PS5 HDMI Repair (all models), $125. This is an HDMI port replacement. It fixes no picture, flickering or cut-out video, and cables that fall out or wiggle. Text me a photo of the port and a short description and I can usually tell you if this is the fix.

🌡️ PS5 liquid metal or clean: how it works

Over time the thermal compound on the PS5 processor dries out, and dust packs the fan and heatsink. The console then runs hot, gets loud, and can shut itself off.

  1. Open and inspectPanels and the fan assembly come off so I can see how bad the dust and old compound are.
  2. Deep cleanFan, heatsink fins, vents and the board are cleaned out so air can move again.
  3. Replace the compoundThe old compound is removed from the chip and heatsink. Depending on the service you pick, liquid metal is applied with the surrounding parts protected, or the console gets a full clean only.
  4. Reassemble and testEverything goes back together, then I check temperatures, fan noise, and stability under load.

PS4 consoles often get loud and hot as the original paste dries out and dust builds up.

  1. Open the consoleThe top and bottom shells and the shielding come off.

  3. Repair the padsPads and traces are cleaned and repaired if they were damaged.
  4. Solder in the new portA new port is fitted and every joint is checked.

🔧 Console Repairs: How It Works▾

The three most common console repairs, step by step, with what to know before you book.

🌡️ Thermal paste replacement

Thermal paste carries heat from the processor into the heatsink. When it dries out, the console runs hot, the fan gets loud, and it may shut off or throttle.

  1. Open the consoleShells, screws and shielding come off, and I keep the screws sorted so everything goes back in the right place.
  2. Clean out the dustThe fan, heatsink and vents are cleared so air can move freely.
  3. Remove the old pasteThe dried paste is wiped off the chip and the heatsink without scratching either surface.
  4. Apply fresh pasteA thin, even layer of new thermal paste goes on the chip.
  5. Reassemble and testI put it back together and check fan noise and temperatures before it goes back to you.

Good to know: paste is not the fix for every overheating console. If the fan is failing or the vents are blocked, I will tell you what is actually going on. Opening any console can leave signs that it was opened.

💧 Liquid metal application (PS5)

Liquid metal moves heat much better than standard paste, and it is the option offered for the PS5 processor.

  1. Open and cleanThe PS5 is opened and the heatsink and fan are cleaned out.
  2. Remove the old compoundOld compound is fully cleaned off the chip and heatsink.
  3. Protect the surrounding partsThe small parts around the chip are protected, because liquid metal conducts electricity.
  4. Apply the liquid metalA small, controlled amount is spread on the chip.
  5. Reassemble and testI check temperatures and stability under load before returning it.

Risks and caveats: liquid metal conducts electricity, so it must stay exactly where it is meant to. It can also stain or react with some metals, so it is only used where the chip and heatsink are suitable. If your console does not need it or is not a good fit, I will recommend the Clean Only option instead. It is not offered for every console.

📺 HDMI port replacement

The HDMI port is soldered to the motherboard. Pulling on the cable, or a hard bump, can crack the port or lift its pads, which causes no picture, flickering, or a loose cable.

  1. DiagnoseI rule out the cable and TV, then inspect the port for bent pins, cracks, or lifted pads.
  2. Open the consoleThe console is opened and the motherboard is exposed.
  3. Remove the old portThe board is heated and the damaged port is carefully lifted off.
  4. Repair the pads and tracesOld solder is cleaned off and any damaged pad or trace is repaired.
  5. Solder in the new portA new HDMI port is aligned and soldered in, and each joint is checked.
  6. Test and reassembleI test picture and sound and wiggle-test the connection before closing it up.

Risks and caveats: this is delicate micro-soldering. If the pads or traces under the port are badly damaged, the repair is harder and I will tell you before going further. It is done per console model, since PS4, PS5 and Xbox Series X ports are not interchangeable. If you are not sure the port is the problem, text me a photo and a short description first.

ℹ️ What to expect for Switch

Switch work is still being built out, so the list is short right now. I have done some Switch repairs, and more services will be added here as I do more.

🏆 Which pro controllers can get Hall Effect or TMR?

Not every pro controller can be converted. Hall Effect and TMR sticks only fit controllers whose stick modules are compatible, so it depends on the model. Each one is confirmed before any work starts.

  • Xbox Elite Series 2: OEM stick replacement only. The magnets in a Hall Effect or TMR stick can interfere with the magnets already inside this controller and throw off the stick, so I do not recommend it. If you still want to try it, buyer beware: it may not work well, and there is a real chance it will not be successful. Text me and we can talk it over.
  • SCUF Instinct: Hall Effect and TMR are listed above.
  • Battle Beaver: coming soon. Compatibility depends on the model, so text me what you have.

🖱️ How a mouse click mod is done

A mouse click mod swaps the standard controller buttons for switches that click like a mouse button. That makes rapid inputs faster and lighter.

  1. Pick your controller and kitPS4, DualSense, DualSense Edge, or Xbox Elite Series 2. The standard kit changes the main buttons. The full kit also adds the triggers and bumpers.
  2. Open the controllerThe shell is opened carefully, avoiding battery and ribbon cables.
  3. Install the click switchesSwitches are added or swapped at each chosen button location on the board.
  4. Test every inputEach modified button is tested for a clean click, and the unmodified inputs are checked to make sure they still work.
  5. Reassemble and final checkThe controller is closed up and tested once more on the console.

Note: on the DualSense Edge, adding mouse click completely stops the adjustable triggers. On the Xbox Elite Series 2, adjustable triggers still work with the Xtreme Clicky kits, and with any other brand mouse click disables them.
